What does direction by Amaya look like?

Aesthetically, I am interested in many things. Regarding choice of material, one goal of mine is writing and producing work about black and brown characters that isn't exclusively about black and brown trauma. I want to see investigative and unfiltered realism based on real people of color; I want to see work based on brown and black experiences today and in everyday life. This includes black and brown joy!

Physically, I am very interested in elemental work in choreography as well as gestural movement. Specifically, repetition and duration in excess. As well as, minimal set and prop design, substituting props and set dressing with object specific sound design and pantomime.

Technically, some things I want to explore are digital life (through projection mapping) as well as integrating live sound mixing and recorded sound with live theater. I'm interested in seeing how the concert industry and theater industry, specifically in technical design, can merge to create a new experience. Collaborating with professionals in the concert industry is something I find incredibly exciting and believe will be generative to my creativity.

I am an emerging director, so my large scale goals are still green and malleable. However, something I am always working towards in the micro, is specificity.

I know what I want, but am energized to hear what others want and are passionate about too. Collaboration is something I’ve gained a lot of practice with in my two years as an Original Works major at Cornish College of the Arts, and is one of my favorite parts of the directing/producing process.
